HF Radio - 2008 Final Draft Rankings
These ratings are compiled by the HF Radio Host Dustin Nielson who talks with a number of prominent hockey scouts throughout the season.
This is not to be confused with a Mock Draft. The HF Radio Mock Draft will be released in the first half of June.
1. Steven Stamkos - Sarnia Sting, Center
Player Vitals: 6'0, 176
07-08 Stats: 61gp - 58g - 47a - 105pts
Steven Stamkos went wire to wire as the top prospect for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. His number say sniper but if you watch his game you will realize that he is a well rounded player. Will have a very good shot at making the jump to the NHL next season. Undisputed heavyweight champ of the 2008 NHL Draft!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Zach Bogosian - Peterborough, Defense
Player Vitals: 6'2, 197
07-08 Stats: 60gp - 11g - 50a - 61pts
In a year stock piled with top notch defenseman we feel that Zach Bogosian may be the cream of the crop, however it's very close. He averaged over a point per game this season and is a powerful skater who keeps low to the ice and has the ability to move the puck up the ice quickly whether it is with his skating or a good first pass. He has an NHL ready body and is pretty close to being ready for the next level.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Drew Doughty - Guelph Storm, Defense
Player Vitals: 6'0, 219
07-08 Stats: 58gp - 13g - 37a - 50pts
Doughty shined throughout the season with the Storm as well as with the Canadian World Junior squad. Scouts have said that at certain times throughout the season he looked a little tired but that is because he played alot of hockey in the past 12 months. His conditioning could use a little bit of a boost but there is no denying that he has what it takes to be a top two defenseman in the NHL.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Nikita Filatov - Moscow CKSA, Left Wing
Player Vitals: 6'0, 172
07-08 Stats: 34gp - 32g - 34a - 66pts
Talking to scouts it appears as though Filatov's skill set falls somewhere inbetween Alex Cherepanov and Alex Ovechkin. He has continued to grow throughout the season and will use that size to compliment his above average speed and ability to find the back of the net. Appears to be willing to pay the price by going to the front of the net and isn't afraid of crashing into the corners. Besides Stamkos he is the top offensive talent in the draft.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Luke Schenn - Kelowna Rockets, Defense
Player Vitals: 6'3, 216
07-08 Stats: 57gp - 7g - 21a - 28pts
When you look at this years group of defenseman Schenn is the type of guy you can have on the ice in any situation and also toss a 'C' on his shoulder if you want to. Schenn may not have the offensive upside of guys like Doughty and Bogosian but he will clear the crease and drop the mitts when needed. Will most likely be the cornerstone of what's expected to be a pretty good Kelowna Rockets team next year. A real beauty.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Alex Pietrangelo - Niagra, Defense
Player Vitals: 6'3, 206
07-08 Stats: 60gp - 13g - 40a - 53pts
When it comes to offense from the blueline Pietrangelo is right up there with Bogosian and Doughty, the only problem with Pietrangelo's game is how he handles things in his own end. He is a liablity defensively but he just needs to work on small things like position and the ability to not start running around. Good coaching should be able to help him become steady on the backend. Has what it takes to be a top unit powerplay guy and top 3 blueliner in the NHL.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. Mikkel Boedker - Kitchener, Left Wing
Player Vitals: 5'11, 195
07-08 Stats: 69gp - 29g- 44a- 73pts
Coming to North America has been great for the development of Mikkel Boedker's game and he's been a key contributor on one of the best teams in the entire country. If you had to compare him to an NHLer from what I've heard from scouts he's a poorman's Marian Gaborik with better playmaking skills and a little less finish. He has a solid frame for being just shy of 6 feet tall. Will most likely need a couple of years, one more in junior and one in the AHL before being NHL ready.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. Tyler Myers - Kelowna Rockets, Defense
Player Vitals: 6'7, 204
07-08 Stats: 65gp - 6g - 13a - 19pts
Tyler Myers is the official giant of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Scouts love his size and his skating ability. It looks as though he is just figuring out how to use his size to his advantage. Once he puts it all together he could be a dominant physical shutdown blueliner. He does not have the offensive upside like Doughty, Bogosian and Pietrangelo but he does have one key thing you can't teach size...and alot of it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. Colin Wilson - Boston University, Center
Player Vitals: 6'1, 215
07-08 Stats: 34gp - 12g - 22a - 34pts
Left the USA Under 18 Program to play at Boston University and it's a decision that has worked out well for Colin Wilson. As a freshman Wilson worked his way up from the 3rd line to the top line with B.U. He was also given a top role with the United States World Junior team and managed to step his game up a notch in that tournament playing alongside close friend and 2007 top prospect James vanRiemsdyk. May only need one more year to be ready.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10. Cody Hodgson - Brampton, Center
Player Vitals: 5'11, 185
07-08 Stats: 68gp - 40g- 45a- 85pts
Probably brings the most complete game to the table as far as forwards go. Hodgson has the leadership, the finishing ability, playmaking ability and he's clutch. He's not as explosive as a guy like Zach Boychuk but many scouts have said he's very steady and he's the top of guy where you know what you are going to get. His upside will be a top 6 forward, I could see him developing into a very good second line center at the NHL level. A great all-round player
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11. Zach Boychuk - Lethbridge, Wing
Player Vitals: 5'10, 175
07-08 Stats: 61gp - 33g- 39a- 72pts
Boychuk's numbers took a slight dip this year but it doesn't take away from his explosiveness. Boychuk, much like Doughty, played in every single event he was eligble for in the past 12 months. He doesn't have size but he is built like a tank. His lowerbody strength make his very difficult to knock of the puck and also gives him outstanding acceleration. Has the hands and hockey sense to score incredible goals and combines that with a blistering shot.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12. Kyle Beach - Everett Silvertips, Center
Player Vitals: 6'3, 203
07-08 Stats: 60gp - 27g - 30a - 60pts
Beach's stock has steadily decreased throughout the season but the bottom line is he still brings alot to the table that no other top talent does in 2008. He's your prototypical power forward, he averaged a point per game in the WHL this season and chalked up 222 penalty minutes. Scouts don't like how he is undisciplined at times but that's what makes Kyle Beach the player he is. If a team is able to keep Beach under control they will have a monster.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
13. Michael Del Zotto - Oshawa, Defense
Player Vitals: 6'0, 211
07-08 Stats: 64gp - 16g - 47a - 63pts
Del Zotto plays a similiar game to that of Alex Pietrangelo, meaning he is lethal offensively but still needs to work on the defensive part of his game. Lots of upside if his hockey sense inside his own blueline catches up with his offensive IQ. Had more points in the OHL this season than Bogosian, Doughty and Pietrangelo and that's saying something.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14. Luca Sbisa - Lethbridge Hurricanes, Defense
Player Vitals: 6'2, 190
07-08 Stats: 62gp - 6g- 27a- 33pts
Luca Sbisa made a great decision coming to North America this season. You could tell from the moment he hit the ice in Lethbridge that he had a ton of raw talent. Moved up the rankings throughout the season as his game adjusted to the Western Hockey League style. Is a smooth skater and could develop into a good powerplay guy. He's right there with Delzotto atop the 2nd level of blueliners available in the '08 draft.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
15. Joshua Bailey - Windsor, Center
Player Vitals: 5'11, 188
07-08 Stats: 67gp - 29g - 67a - 96pts
When it comes to offensive production in the OHL this season only Steven Stamkos had more points then Windsor center Josh Bailey. Doesn't have the biggest frame but he has bulked up tremendously during the season, according to our numbers he gained atleast 15 pounds this season. Bailey impressed on a line with Hodgson and Boychuk during the CHL Top Prospects game, show that he has the game to play with elite players.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
16. Mattias Tedenby - HV71-U20, Left Wing
Player Vitals: 5'10, 176
07-08 Stats: 23gp - 3g - 3a - 6pts
This offensive dynamo from Sweden played so well in the first part of the season he got the promotion to the Swedish Elite League. When it comes to acceleration and end to end speed there are not many people in the draft who can match Tedenby, maybe only Zach Boychuk among the first round prospects. His speed and skill game should fit nicely in the NHL game we now see.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
17. Joe Colborne - Camrose Kodiaks, Center/Wing
Player Vitals: 6'5, 190
07-08 Stats: 55gp - 33g - 57a - 90pts
Colborne was named the CJHL Player of the Year after leading his team to the AJHL Championship, the Doyle Cup title and to the final of the Royal Bank Cup. He has the size, the wheels, the hands and the playmaking village. His coaches would like to see him shoot a little bit more. Heading to the University of Denver, a very good program. The only downfall in Colborne's game is that he doesn't play very physical and doesn't drive the net. Could surprise in top ten.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
18. Colten Teubert - Regina Pats, Defense
Player Vitals: 6'4, 185
07-08 Stats: 66gp - 7g - 16a - 23pts
Teubert will never be an offensive threat from the blueline but he defintely is a work horse. He logged a ton of minutes in his rookie season with the Pats and stepped it up another notch this year. Reminds me of a guy like Kyle McLaren. Is not as great as skater as the defenseman at the top end of the draft but he is certainly a top 20 pick. Was thought to be top ten at this time last year but slipped a bit.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
19. Jacob Markstrom - Brynas Jr., Goalie
Player Vitals: 6'3, 178
07-08 Stats: 22gp - 2.00gaa - .931 save%
Was dominant in the junior leagues and managed to get a look in the elite league playing in a handful of games with Brynas top team. Is a big goaltender who does a great job taking up space in the net. Combines his size with a great glove to challenge the shooter. Showed in international events that he can play well in the clutch. I give hima slight edge over Chet Pickard when it comes to being the top goaltender selected.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
20. John Carlson - USHL-Indiana, Defense
Player Vitals: 6'2, 220
07-08 Stats: 59gp - 12g - 31a - 43pts
Another great product from the USHL. The Indiana Ice blueliner is a complete package, a big strong defenseman who is a strong skater and can manage the powerplay from the point. Uses a big booming point shot to his advantage. He will play pro hockey, he already has the build. Pretty close to a sure thing, great combo of skill, size and toughness.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
21. Colby Robak - Brandon, Defense
Player Vitals: 6'3, 194
07-08 Stats: 71gp - 6g - 24a - 30pts
Plays a pretty similiar game to that of Luca Sbisa. Robak is expected to develop into an offensive threat. He's a smooth skater on the back end with a quick set of hands that gives him the ability to make smart plays and good first passes working the puck out of his own end. Needs to work a bit on his work in the corners and defensive awareness but the offensive tools are too good to pass up.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
22. Zac Dalpe - Penticton, Center
Player Vitals: 6'0, 170
07-08 Stats: 46gp - 27g - 36a - 33pts
A real offensive catalyst who is capable of looking after things in his own end as well. Is a waterbug out on the ice, plays with a high level of energy. His high intensity and above average quickness give him an advantage over others. Came out of nowhere this season making many people wonder what his upside is, if he continues to progress like he did this year then the sky is the limit.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
23. Greg Nemisz - Windsor, Center
Player Vitals: 6'3, 197
07-08 Stats: 68gp - 34g - 33a - 67pts
Has that rare combination of great hands and willingness to go to the net. Made a name for himself this season by going straight to the front of the goal and banging puck homes. He has the size and mindset to be a powerforward in the NHL. The only draw back on Nemisz is his skating which may scare some people away, but he's willing to work on it so that may not be a worry.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
24. Jordan Eberle - Windsor, Center
Player Vitals: 5'10, 174
07-08 Stats: 70gp - 42g - 33a - 75pts
You can't teach goal scorer and when it comes to putting the puck in the net it's tough to find anyone better than Jordan Eberle in the 2008 draft. He won't blow you away with speed but is fast enough to get where he needs to be to put the puck in the net. Is capable of burying atleast 55 goals in the Western Hockey League next season. A team that needs goal scorer would love to land Eberle.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
25. Aaron Ness - Roseau - H.S., Defense
Player Vitals: 5'10, 157
07-08 Stats: 31gp - 28g - 44a - 72pts
He was named Minnesota's Mr. Hockey for the 2008 season. An incredible offensive threat from the blueline. Due to his lack of size in order to survive and thrive he has to be quick....and quick he is. His quickness allows him to take chances offensively. Upside will be worth taking the chance on a smaller player. Despite weighing less than 160 pounds Ness is willing to play gritty and make the hit if it's needed.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
26. Tyler Cuma - Ottawa 67's, Defense
Player Vitals: 6'2, 180
07-08 Stats: 59gp - 4g - 28a - 32pts
Another offensive d-man coming out of the Ontario Hockey League. Isn't on the same level as Bogosian, Doughty or Pietrangelo but is still an oustanding playmaker. He is a good decision maker which is a key reason why he led the 67's in plus minus. Offense is his biggest strength but he is also reliable in his own end so teams won't have to worry about too many mistakes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
27. Anton Gustafsson - Frolunda Jr., Center
Player Vitals: 6'2, 194
07-08 Stats: 33gp - 15g - 17a - 32pts
The team that selects Gustaffson will be getting a very complete player. He has a high skill level and is a very smart player. His hockey sense is the key to him being a very good two way player. Is smart enough and has the NHL size that he may be ready for the NHL sooner then some may think. Doesn't have the skills to play on a top line in the NHL but is versatile enough to play 2nd, 3rd or 4th unit. Safe pick.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
28. Kirill Petrov - Kazan, Russia Div 1 - Left Wing
Player Vitals: 6'3, 198
07-08 Stats: 47gp - 4g - 6a - 10pts
Petrov is ranked here at 17th with a lack of transfer agreement not being taken into consideration. When you look at talent and potential this is where Petrov belongs. He's got the size and spent the entire season with Kazan in the top level of the Russian Super League, that's 2 levels higher then Nikita Filatov. He contributed as well as a teenager could putting the puck in the back of the net 4 times while playing against men.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
29. Nicolas Deschamps - Chicoutimi, Center
Player Vitals: 6'0, 173
07-08 Stats: 70gp - 24g - 43a - 67pts
Came out of no where this season to finish the season as the top draft eligible prospect in the QMJHL. Is a smart player who works very hard shift in and shift out. Adjusted well as a rookie in the league and used his above average wheels to his advantage. Worked his way into the late first round radar. Expections will be higher on him next season and I'm interested in seeing how he handles that.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
30. Michael Stone - Calgary, Defense
Player Vitals: 6'2, 200
07-08 Stats: 71gp - 10g - 25a - 35pts
Michael Stone may be one of the most overlooked prospects in the 2008 draft. Did not need to play a top two role on the Calgary Hitmen this year with the likes of Alzner, Plante and Seabrook ahead of him yet he still put up over 30 points. If he managed to get more ice time this year I think many scouting services would have him in the top 20 rather than the top 40. Very steady, hard shot, good size, not much to worry about. To make it simple...Stone is rock solid.
